Social Media Strategy for Entrepreneurs

Playing it Safe vs Playing it Real

risk managementToo many businesses are playing it safe right now, especially in a time when the environment caters to those that take risks.

If playing it safe got you in trouble, then what makes you think that continuing to do so will help you navigate the social media waters? Right now, the new media landscape is like the Wild West…there aren’t any rules, and there are new guys taking over every single day.

Speed Counts

Having a big gun helps, but being quick is more important. You can’t be quick if it takes your organization longer than a few hours to make a decision.

Red tape leads to indecision…no one wants to take the heat if they make a bad choice, but that’s the exact kind of thinking that keeps companies from being able to develop trust with consumers.

You might make mistakes, but when you do, simply owning up to them will earn you huge kudos from consumers that understand that it’s impossible to be perfect. They don’t ask you to be perfect…all they’re asking is that you’re honest and that you care. The rest takes care of itself.

There Aren’t any Rules

There are no rules for playing it real…you simply plan and react. Sometimes things go wrong; sometimes they go right. As long as you make a few good moves from time to time, you’ll continue to be ahead of the game.

It’s the companies that refuse to join the conversation…the ones that are playing it safe, that will be struggling. They already are.

You’re Either in or You’re Out

Facebook Fan Pages are becoming a valuable asset to both big and small businesses. Twitter accounts are building relationships with clients and consumers on a daily basis. It’s at a point now where if you aren’t involved in social media, you look like a relic.

You probably are.

  • Great thoughts - this reminds me of one of the quotes in Seth Godin's "What Matters Now" eBook, which used the analogy of the birds of the Galapagos and evolution. In summary, the person's point was that if you are looking around at what everyone else is doing and thinking "boy, that's weird," you probably should do some thinking. Because more than likely, everyone else is looking at you saying, "boy, they are weird."
  • I like that! I haven't read that one yet, but I've heard about it. The trick is knowing when what's normal becomes "safe" again. That's when it's fun to be a bit crazy :)
